Where Canggu actually eats

Past the Instagram brunch queues, the food that keeps people here.

Where Canggu actually eats

Canggu has a reputation for breakfast. Specifically, for a certain kind of breakfast — the açaí bowl arranged for the camera, the queue outside the place with the good light, the smoothie the colour of a sunset. Some of it is very good. Most of it is fine. All of it is photographed.

But spend a week here and you learn that the food Canggu is known for and the food Canggu is loved for are two different menus. The first is on every guide. The second takes a little longer to find — and it's the reason people who came for a fortnight are still here two years later.

Here is where we send guests, and where we eat ourselves.

On the doorstep

One of the quiet pleasures of Babakan is how much good eating is within a short walk. Nüde Café is a few minutes down the lane — an easy, unhurried breakfast without the drive. Openhouse Kitchen and Daeng Burger are close by for the days you'd rather not go far, and Uma Desa's jogging track is there for the morning after. It's the kind of neighbourhood where you can leave the scooter at home and still eat well.

The one worth the ride: breakfast

For the breakfast worth planning your morning around, it's Gigi Susu — the best in the area, and it knows it. The pastries and the coffee are the reason to go; the light is the reason for the queue. Our advice: arrive early or mid-afternoon, skip the crowd, and yes — bring the camera, because you'll want the photograph whether you meant to or not.

The warung, and why it matters

For every glass-house brunch spot there is a warung — a small, family-run kitchen serving the food Bali actually eats. Nasi campur, grilled fish, sambal that will teach you something about yourself. Warung Sika is the one: fresh, properly local, and always full — of Balinese families and long-stay foreigners in equal measure, which is the surest sign there is. Go early. The queue is a compliment it has earned.

The good table

When the evening calls for something special, Desa Kitsune is the one to book. Fine dining done properly — premium plates, a serious drinks list, service that anticipates rather than hovers, and an ambience that makes an occasion of it. This is Canggu at the top of its game, and it holds its own against anywhere in Seminyak or beyond.

Sundown, by the sea

And then there is the beach. For the sunset end of things, The Lawn is our pick — not the biggest beach club on the strip, and better for it: intimate, relaxed, a lovely place to watch the light go without the scrum. For daytime, Times Warung is the one — beach drinks, easy snacks, and some of the finest sunsets on this stretch of coast, feet more or less in the sand.

A word on eating in

Of course, the best table in Canggu is sometimes your own. A private chef will come to the villa, shop that morning, and cook to your table — which, after a few days of finding your favourites out, is its own quiet luxury. Your Villa Hostess can arrange it, along with a floating breakfast on the pool for the morning you'd rather not move at all.

That, in the end, is the Canggu people stay for. Not the queue for the famous breakfast — the slow discovery of the tables, the warungs and the mornings that never made anyone's list. Villa Jasmine sits in Babakan, walking distance to the neighbourhood's cafés and a short ride from the best of Canggu's tables.
